Post’s Epic Cereal Gambit: Good Morenings

A couple of years ago I remember reading an article online about how Post Cereal was going to eventually change the formula’s in their cereals to reduce sugars and bolster whole grains. In a move somewhat similar to what General Mills has already done with the “Big G” line, it now appears as though Post has embarked upon their own epic cereal gambit and done just that.

Say hello to “Good Morenings.” Or jusy say “Good Morning”

I still can’t find any mention of it online, and I’ve yet to see any of these cereals outside of the one Walmart Supercenter I found them at (including, I should add, the largest Wegman’s in the United States) but Post’s new Good Mornings cereals do exist. Cartoonless and mascotless as they are, the new flavors are Berry Loops, Cocoa Cinnamon Crunch, Waffle Crunch, Frosted Flakes, Strawberry and Crème, and Vanilla O’s.

From what I can gather, Berry Loops is essentially Froot Loops, while Waffle Crunch is a rebranding of Waffle Crisp with slightly less sugar. Frosted Flakes is, well, self-explanatory, but the others flavors are intriguing. I bought Cocoa Cinnamon Crunch because it’s ingredients made it sound like a combination of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Waffle Crisp, and Cocoa Puffs (all in my top 10) while Vanilla O’s and Strawberry and Crème have a more sophisticated, “organic” sounding flavor profile.

There seem to be a couple of really interesting marketing concepts being used here. At 2.98 per 22 oz. box, there’s definitely an appeal to economic sense, and it’s reflected in the overt “Mega” pack claim of packing enough cereal for 22 bowls (even though a bowl is what, usually two or three actual servings?) Likewise, the ditching of a mascot and use of the whole “No High Fructose Corn Syrup” spiel on the front of the box is definitely an appeal to consumers who want to buy something nutritiouse, but maybe not ready to jump into the nutrition zealot camp. My take? The cereal will still probably be criticized for having too much sugar and blah blah blah, if only because people who deny themselves the nostalgic and yummy experience of eating something that’s more or less a “C-” on the health spectrum need something to complain about.

Ok, my own counter spiel complete, I’m interested to hear what others think about these new cereals. Any one else see them yet? Which one looks most intriguing to you?
